VANCOUVER — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public about possibly contaminated mussels harvested in B.C.

The affected mussels, harvested by Salt Spring Island-based Island Sea Farms between July 19 and Aug. 2, may contain diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) biotoxin.

The product has been distributed in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario and possibly other provinces or territories under the brand names Saltspring Island Mussels, Albion Fisheries Ltd., Pacific Rim Shellfish Corp., Albion and B&C Food. A recall is currently in effect.

Consumers who purchased raw mussels between July 19 and August 6 are asked to check with their retailer to see if their purchase is covered by the recall.

Contaminated mussels may not look or smell spoiled, but consumption can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and chills.
