1. Which materials will I need to teach an ADVANCED.fst or BASICS.fst course?

ADVANCED.fst 

  • ADVANCED.fst coursebook and certification (A101) 
  • Recommended: ADVANCED.fst Instructor toolkit (ATK), includes customizable Instructor CD-ROM PowerPoint presentation, Instructor Guide and the Food Safety Showdown Game.
  • Recommended: ServSafe® Steps to food safety Video series, Canadian edition (A100V).

BASICS.fst

  • BASICS.fst coursebook and certification (B100E).
  • Recommended: BASICS.fst Instructor toolkit (BTK), Includes Teaching Guide, Presentation CD-ROM PowerPoint and the BASICS.fst Group Activity Package. 
  • Recommended: ServSafe® Steps to food safety Video series, Canadian edition (A100V).

2. How do I order training materials?

To obtain an order form call 1-888-687-8796 or by visiting www.TrainCan.com/index-forms.html  
Fill out the order form and fax it to 416-447-5333.

3. When must I order course books and exam answer sheets?

Please make sure to order your books and answer sheets four weeks prior to the exam date.

Order exam questionnaires four weeks prior to an exam date. If four-weeks notice cannot be supplied please provide either an overnight courier account number or credit card number for the shipping costs of the exam questionnaires. Forms received 5 business days or less before the exam will be charged a $50 dollar processing fee in addition to the shipping charges.

Answer sheets, course books and exam questionnaires can be ordered by faxing the appropriate forms to 416-447-5333.

TrainCan cannot guarantee fulfilling requests submitted less than 3 business days before an exam.

4. I have received my books but I can't find the examination questionnaires?

Examination questionnaires need to be ordered with the Exam Request Form four weeks prior to your exam date. An Exam Request Form is included in your Instructor Package. Examination questionnaires are generally sent out 21 days before the exam date.

5. How do I order exam questionnaires?

ONLY REGISTERED INSTRUCTORS CAN ORDER EXAMS.

Exam questionnaires must be ordered four weeks prior to an intended test date. Please complete either the ADVANCED.fst or the BASICS.fst Exam Request Form . An Exam Request Form is included in your Instructor Package. Please complete the form with all required information and fax it to 416-447-5333, Attn: Course Administration. If you do not have an Exam Request Form please call 1-888-687-8796 or visit www.TrainCan.com/index-forms.html  to download a copy.

6. What is an exam questionnaire?

It is a booklet containing a set of 50 (BASICS.fst) or 80 (ADVANCED.fst) questions that are answered by students on exam day.

7. What is an answer sheet?

It is the Scantron sheet that students use to mark their answers on. The information on this sheet is scanned into a computer that grades the exam and generates the certificate.

8. What are the passing grades for the ADVANCED.fst and BASICS.fst certification exams?

ADVANCED.fst requires a passing grade of 75% or greater.
BASICS.fst requires a passing grade of 74% or greater.

9. What is the format of the exam questions?

ADVANCED.fst is all multiple-choice questions. 
BASICS.fst includes both true and false and multiple-choice questions.

10. How do I receive permission to read the ADVANCED.fst or BASICS.fst examination aloud to an examinee with a documented disability?

Call TrainCan at 1-888-687-8796 or visit www.TrainCan.com to receive a Request to Modification of Examination Form. Once completed please fax it to 416-447-5333 attn: Course Administration.

11. What languages are the ADVANCED.fst and BASICS.fst coursebooks and examinations available in?

The BASICS.fst coursebook, online and certification exam are available in English and French. ADVANCED.fst is currently only available in English. For French courses TrainCan is offering the ServSafe French coursebook (La Salubrité Alimentaire, C'est Votre Affaire) with an ADVANCED.fst supplement. A French ADVANCED.fst exam is available.

12. When can I expect my exam results?

Results and certificates are sent back to the instructor two to four weeks from the time the class materials are received for correcting. Instructors are responsible for giving students their scores and certificates.

13. Will I receive some form of written documentation that indicates I have passed the exam?

All individuals that pass the examination will receive an 8 ½ X 11 certificate. Instructors receive a grade report with the student's grade and certification number.

14. What do I do if I have a question about the results I received?

Call TrainCan, Inc at 1-888-687-8796 or visit www.TrainCan.com to download a Research Request Form. Once completed, please fax it to 416-447-5333 attn: Course Administration. NOTE: TrainCan keeps answer sheets for 3 months only. All inquiries must be made within 3 months of exam date.

15. How much do re-test answer sheets cost?

ADVANCED.fst re-tests are $37.00 (+ G.S.T).
BASICS.fst re-tests are $10 (+ G.S.T.)

16. How do I order a re-test?

Section 3 of the exam order request form has a section to order a re-test, simply indicate the quantity required. All re-tests require an answer sheet which can be ordered by faxing a Materials Price List to 416-447-5333.

17. How much do duplicate certificates cost?

Duplicate certificates cost $20.00 each plus GST. Shipping and handling is included.

18. How do I order a duplicate certificate?

Fill out a duplicate request form and fax it to 416-447-5333 or mail it to 103-23 Lesmill Rd. Toronto, ON M3B 3P6. A Duplicate Certificate Request Form is included in your Instructor package. 19. Is there an expiration date on either of the certificates?

Yes, the ADVANCED.fst and BASICS.fst certificates are valid for five years. Check with your Provincial or regional Health Department for local requirements.

20. Do all jurisdictions have re-certification requirements?

No. If food handler certification is only recommended, most jurisdictions do not require certification renewal. Jurisdictions mandating food handler certification typically have re-certification requirements that vary, depending on the jurisdiction. Check with your local health department for requirements.

21. What should I do if I need to re-certify?

TrainCan recommends re-taking the seminar. This helps you obtain new information and meet with other colleagues to discuss new challenges regarding food safety. If you do not wish to re-take the course you should re-certify by re-writing the certification exam. A registered instructor must proctor the exam.
