PROVINCE

FOOD SAFETY LEGISLATION

LEVEL OF TRAINING

PROVINCIAL INFORMATION

Alberta

Provincial Requirement

Where there are five or more employees at least one must be trained in food safety. 
** Under review one person per shift

Approved Certification exams or Alberta provincial exam.

British Columbia

Provincial Requirement

The operator and one employee in his/her absence must be trained in a food safety course approved by the Ministry of Health.

Approved Certification exams or FoodSafe provincial exam.

Manitoba

Recommendation for the province. Winnipeg is the only city in the province that has its own by-law which requires certified foodhandlers.

No level specified for Province.
Winnipeg requires the person in charge and one out every 5 employees on duty at one time.

Provincially, Certification must be posted.
Winnipeg: City-certification exam.

N.W.T*

Recomendation
(will become requirement very soon.)

One person per shift during operation must be certified.

Approved Certification exams or local exam.

Ontario

Province: Recommendation. Regulation is under review at the moment and will most likely require training in the new regulation. 
The city of Brantford
The city of Toronto 
The city of Hamilton
Now haven mandatory food handler training.

City of Brantford: Within 60 days of employment Managers of all food service premised shall have a food handler certification certificate or its equivalent.
City of Toronto: Suggested wording is the owner/operator of high and medium risk food premises and at least one certified food handler in a supervisory position per shift.

Approved Certification exams or local health unit exam.
No provincial examination standard

P.E.I.

Recommendation.

No level specified.

No requirement for exam or certification.

Quebec

Requirement

I person per shift.

MAPAQ exam by MAPAQ approved trainer only.
No Exceptions

Saskatchewan

Provincial Requirement

Unless exempted by the Medical Health Officer every holder of a licence shall ensure that a person who has successfully completed a course approved by the Minister is working in the establishment at all times when food is being prepared or served.

Approved Certification exams or provincial exam.

Yukon*

Recommendation.

No level specified.

No requirement for exam or certification.

New Brunswick

Recommendation (Regulation under review, will most likely become a requirement).

Not currently specified, but will likely become one person in management level and another staff member in their absence.

No mandatory certification at the moment.

Newfoundland

Recommendation

No requirement.

No mandatory certification at the moment.

Nova Scotia*

Provincial Requirement

Suggested wording:
The operator and an employee who represents the operator in their absence must hold a certificate confirming their completion of a food hygiene training program recognized by the Administrator

Approved Certification exams or provincial exam.

Nunavut*

Recommendation (currently using N.W.T. regulations.)

No requirement

No exam required.
