KITCHENER -- Waterloo Regional Police are investigating after a sewing needle was discovered in a Häägen-Dazs ice cream bar.
Police were contacted on Monday by a Kitchener resident who said the needle was found in a Vanilla Dark Chocolate ice cream bar purchased on Friday at the Food Basics store on Fischer-Hallman Road.
The customer returned the three-pack box of ice cream bars and the object — a two-inch sewing needle — to the store on Saturday. No one was hurt by the needle.
All of the boxes from that particular lot of ice cream bars — bearing a best-before date of “12 January 13” — were pulled from the store’s shelves on Saturday as a precaution, said Gillian Kerr, a spokesperson for Food Basics’ parent company, Metro Ontario.
“We definitely hope this is an isolated incident,” Kerr said. “Customer safety is Metro’s number 1 concern.”
In an email, a representative from Häägen-Dazs’ Canadian parent company echoed Kerr’s sentiments.
“The health and safety of our consumers is our number 1 priority and we treat all consumer contacts with the utmost importance,” said Selena Fiacco, manager of corporate affairs for Nestlé Canada.
