Labrador-Grenfell Health is advising the public that a case of Hepatitis A has been confirmed in Labrador City.
According to a news release, the individual recently returned from outside the country and is a food service worker at Tim Horton’s in Labrador City.
“While we believe the risk to the public is low, anyone who consumed food and/or beverages from Tim Horton’s from July 3 to July 6 and experiences these symptoms over the next six weeks should see their family doctor,” says Dr. Ada Bennett, Medical Officer of Health with Labrador-Grenfell Health.
The best way to reduce the risk of spreading Hepatitis A is through proper hand washing or hand sanitizing. This is especially important after using the bathroom and before handling food.
On Wednesday, July 13, Labrador-Grenfell Health began routine contact tracing and will be offering immunization to close contacts. Vaccines will also be made available for people who consumed food and/or beverages from Tim Horton’s from July 3 to July 6.
People with potential exposure and who have questions about Hepatitis A can call the Hepatitis A information line toll free at 1-855-255-4372. For more information on Hepatitis A and hand hygiene, visit www.lghealth.ca.
