Tourists are heading home with more than a suntan from warm weather destinations this winter.

Ottawa Public Health is seeing an increase in Salmonella cases as residents return home from the south.

Officials say a significant proportion of cases reported last month are related to travel to resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Investigations show that almost 90 per cent of travel-related cases of food born illnesses stayed at resorts.

Public Health is offering tips to protect yourself from food and water-borne disease when travelling, including receiving recommended vaccines that can prevent illnesses, always wash your hands before eating or drinking and drink only purified water that’s been boiled or disinfected.

On average, there are over 160 cases of salmonella reported every year.
