EDMONTON - A west-end Edmonton restaurant was fined Wednesday $18,170 for repeated health violations and dirty conditions over the past four years.
Allan Lam and Yuk Ping Chan, the owners of Chef’s Grill & Bar at 170th Street and 113th Avenue, pleaded guilty to seven charges under the Public Health Act.
Alberta Health Services prosecutor Rob O’Neill told court that the restaurant has had 37 inspections since it opened in January 2008, triple the rate of average inspections for businesses with a food permit.
Violations included unsafe storage of food items, employees eating or drinking in kitchen areas, generally unsanitary conditions, poor handwashing practices by employees and the use of garbage bags to store uncooked rice and lobster.
“The accused were given numerous warnings,” O’Neill said.
The owners also forgot to renew their food handling permit in the fall of 2011 and were temporarily operating without one.
