UPDATED HEALTH HAZARD ALERT - NO NAME FRENCH CUT GREEN BEANS MAY CONTAIN DANGEROUS BACTERIA

OTTAWA, August 2, 2007 - The public warning issued on August 1, 2007 has been updated to include additional information regarding the product distribution in Quebec.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Loblaws Inc. are warning the public not to consume the No Name French Cut Green Beans described below because the product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. Toxins produced by this bacteria may cause botulism, a life-threatening illness. 

The affected product is No Name French Cut Green Beans, 398 ml cans, bearing UPC 60383 03310. The affected cans bear the following in the top line of the can code. EAA5247, EAA5257, EAA5267, EAA5277, EAB5247, EAB5257, ECA5207, ECA5217, ECA5227, ECA5297, ECB5207, ECB5217, ECB5227 and ECB5307. This product has been distributed in Quebec, Ontario and the Western provinces. 

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with the toxin may cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, double vision, dry throat, respiratory failure and paralysis. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

Loblaws Inc. is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

Currently a larger recall involving numerous brand names of French cut green beans manufactured by Lakeside Foods Inc., Manitowoc, Wisconsin, is underway in the United States. Anyone who has or plans to purchase French Cut Green Beans in the U.S. should consult the Food and Drug Administration website at www.fda.gov for a complete list of the recalled products. Code and label information will also be posted on the Lakeside Foods Inc. website www.lakesidefoods.com.

MISE À JOUR - DANGER POUR LA SANTÉ - DES HARICOTS VERTS COUPÉS À LA FRANÇAISE ET ASSAISONNÉS DE MARQUE SANS NOM POURRAIENT CONTENIR UNE BACTÉRIE DANGEREUSE

OTTAWA, le 2 août 2007 - De nouvelles informations sur la distribution du produit, qui inclut le Québec, viennent s’ajouter à la mise en garde publiée le 1 août dernier.

L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) et Loblaws Inc. avisent la population de ne pas consommer les haricots verts coupés à la française et assaisonnés de marque Sans Nom décrits ci-après parce que ce produit pourrait être contaminé par la bactérie Clostridium botulinum. Les toxines produites par cette bactérie peuvent causer le botulisme, une maladie parfois mortelle. 

Le produit visé, les haricots verts coupés à la française et assaisonnés de marque Sans Nom, sont vendus en boîtes de 398 ml portant le CUP 60383 03310. Les renseignements suivants figurent sur la ligne du haut du code de la boîte du produit visé : EAA5247, EAA5257, EAA5267, EAA5277, EAB5247, EAB5257, ECA5207, ECA5217, ECA5227, ECA5297, ECB5207, ECB5217, ECB5227 et ECB5307. Ce produit a été distribué au Québec, en Ontario et dans les provinces de l’Ouest. 

Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ce produit n’a été signalé.

Les aliments contaminés par Clostridium botulinum ne présentent pas nécessairement d'altération visible ni d'odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par la toxine peut provoquer des nausées, des vomissements, de la fatigue, des étourdissements, des maux de tête, une diplopie ou vision double, un assèchement de la gorge, une insuffisance respiratoire et une paralysie. Dans les cas graves, la contamination par Clostridium botulinum peut causer la mort. 

Loblaws Inc. retire volontairement du marché le produit visé. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.

À l’heure actuelle, un rappel d’envergure, concernant de nombreuses marques de haricots verts coupés à la française et assaisonnés fabriqués par Lakeside Foods Inc., situé à Manitowoc (Wisconsin), a lieu aux États-Unis.

Toute personne qui a acheté ou qui compte acheter des haricots verts coupés à la française et assaisonnés aux États-Unis devrait consulter le site Web de la Food and Drug Administration à l’adresse www.fda.gov pour obtenir la liste complète des produits rappelés. Les codes et l’information sur l’étiquette seront aussi affichés sur le site Web de Lakeside Foods Inc. à l’adresse www.lakesidefoods.com.
