HEALTH HAZARD ALERT - CERTAIN RICHLAND VALLEY AND TAKE AWAY CAFÉ BRAND SANDWICHES MAY CONTAIN LISTERIA MONOCYTOGENES

OTTAWA, June 11, 2010- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Lucerne Foods
are warning the public not to serve or consume certain Richland Valley and Take Away
Café brand sandwiches, described below because these products may be contaminated
with Listeria monocytogenes.
The following sandwiches are affected by this alert.

The affected products also bear on labels Establishment number (Est) 400. The
establishment number is located near the ingredient listing.
These products prepared for Core-Mark International and Mac's Convenience Stores
Inc., were distributed in Alberta and British Columbia.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these
products.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled.
Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause listeriosis, a
foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck
stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune
systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a
mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature
delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
The manufacturer, Lucerne Foods Ltd., Calgary, AB is voluntarily recalling the
affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of
the recall.

(Est) 400. Celui-ci se trouve près de la liste des ingrédients.
Les produits visés, préparés pour le compte de Core-mark International et de Mac's
Convenience Stores Inc., ont été distribués en Colombie-Britannique et en Alberta.
Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits n'a été signalé.
Les aliments contaminés par la bactérie Listeria monocytogenes ne présentent pas
nécessairement d'altération visible ni d'odeur suspecte. La consommation d'aliments
contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la listériose, une maladie d'origine
alimentaire qui peut entraîner une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, une
raideur de la nuque et des nausées. Les femmes enceintes, les personnes âgées et les
personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli sont particulièrement
vulnérables. Dans le cas de la femme enceinte, l'infection peut n'occasionner que de
légers troubles pseudo-grippaux, mais l'enfant qu'elle porte risque d'être infecté,
de naître prématurément ou de mourir avant la naissance.
Le fabricant, Lucerne Foods Ltd., de Calgary (Alberta), retire volontairement du
marché les produits visés. L'ACIA surveille l'efficacité du rappel.
