HEALTH HAZARD ALERT - SUN RICH BRAND AND A & P BRAND CUT CANTALOUPE PRODUCTS MAY CONTAIN SALMONELLA BACTERIA

OTTAWA, March 25, 2008 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Sun Rich Fresh Foods Inc. are warning the public not to consume the Sun Rich Brand and the A & P Brand Cut Cantaloupe products described below because these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. 

The following affected products sold at retail contain cantaloupes from the Honduran grower and packer Agropecuaria Montelibano which appear to be associated with a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak in the United States and Canada.

These products have been distributed in Ontario and Quebec. 

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

The manufacturer, Sun Rich Fresh Foods Inc, Brampton, ON, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. In addition, the manufacturer is also recalling various Cut Cantaloupe Products from Food Service accounts such as hotels, restaurants and institutions in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

OTTAWA, le 25 mars 2008 - L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) et Sun Rich Fresh Foods Inc. avisent la population de ne pas consommer les produits de cantaloup coupé de marques Sun Rich et A & P décrits ci-dessous parce ces produits pourraient être contaminés par la bactérie Salmonella. 

Les produits visés suivants en vente au détail contiennent des cantaloups du producteur et entreprise de conditionnement du Honduras Agropecuaria Montelibano qui semblent associés à une éclosion de Salmonella Litchfield aux États-Unis et au Canada.

Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits n’a été signalé.

Les aliments contaminés par Salmonella ne présentent pas nécessairement d'altération visible ni d'odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par ces bactéries peut causer la salmonellose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire. Chez les jeunes enfants, les gens âgés et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli, la salmonellose peut causer des infections graves, parfois mortelles. Chez les personnes en bonne santé, la salmonellose peut se manifester par des symptômes de courte durée comme une forte fièvre, des maux de tête graves, des vomissements, des nausées, des douleurs abdominales et de la diarrhée. La salmonellose peut entraîner des complications à long terme comme une forme grave d’arthrite.

Le fabricant, Sun Rich Fresh Foods Inc., situé à Brampton (Ontario), retire volontairement du marché les produits visés. Par ailleurs, le fabricant retire aussi divers produits de cantaloup coupé des services de restauration comme ceux des hôtels, des restaurants et des institutions situés en Ontario, au Québec et dans les provinces Maritimes. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
