ALLERGY ALERT - PRESENCE OF CASHEWS IN SOME BERNI BRAND PESTO

OTTAWA, May 22, 2008 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning people
with allergies to cashews not to consume the Berni brand Pesto products described
below. The label of the affected products declares cashews with a French term
'anacardes' that is not commonly recognized in Canada.

All lots of the following products are affected by this warning:

Berni brand Pesto al Pomodoro, a product of Italy, is sold in a 195 g jar bearing
UPC 8 73186 00006 1 and 8 032589 960132,
Berni brand Pesto al Basilico, a product of Italy, is sold in a 195 g jar bearing
UPC 8 73186 00000 9 and 8 032589 960217.

These products are known to have been distributed in British Columbia, Alberta,
Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and may have
been distributed nationally. 

There has been one reported illness associated with the consumption of these products.

Consumption of these products may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in
persons with allergies to cashews. 

The importer, Aurora Importing and Distributing Ltd., Mississauga, Ontario, is
voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is
monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

ALERTE À L'ALLERGIE - PRÉSENCE DE CAJOUS DANS DU PESTO DE MARQUE BERNI 

OTTAWA, le 22 mai 2008 - L'Agence canadienne d'inspection des aliments (ACIA) avise
les personnes allergiques aux cajous de ne pas consommer le pesto de marque Berni
décrit ci-dessous. L'étiquette des produits touchés déclare cajous avec un terme
français 'anacardes' qui n'est pas couramment reconnu au Canada.

Tous les lots des produits suivants sont touchés par la présente mise en garde :

Pesto al Pomodoro de marque Berni, un produit de l'Italie, vendu en pots de 195 g
portant les CUP 8 73186 00006 1 et 8 032589 960132,
Pesto al Basilico de marque Berni, un produit de l'Italie, vendu en pots de 195 g
portant les CUP 8 73186 00000 9 et 8 032589 960217.

On sait que les produits ont été distribués en Colombie-Britannique, en Alberta, au
Manitoba, en Ontario, au Québec, au Nouveau-Brunswick en Nouvelle-Écosse et à
Terre-Neuve, mais ils pourraient aussi l'avoir été à l'échelle nationale. 

Un cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits a été signalé.

La consommation de ces produits peut déclencher une réaction grave, parfois
mortelle, chez les personnes allergiques aux cajous.

L'importateur, Aurora Importing and Distributing Ltd. de Mississauga (Ontario),
retire volontairement du marché les produits touchés. L'ACIA surveille l'efficacité
du rappel.
