ONTARIO: Leadbetter burgers linked to more E. coli cases

CBC News

The number of cases of E. coli associated with eating Leadbetter Cowboy Beef Burgers has risen to five with at least one more suspected case being investigated.
"We wouldn't be surprised if we had some more cases reported," said Ontario's Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams.
Williams told CBC News that some of the cases occurred at a youth camp in Ontario, and that one of those sickened by the tainted burgers had to be hospitalized.
That person has now been released, and everyone else who got ill has recovered.
Williams warns that the strain of E. coli associated with the outbreak, 0157:H7, is the same highly dangerous strain that killed seven people in Walkerton, Ont., 10 years ago.
"This one especially has the ability to cause quite a lot more severe illness, especially in younger people and people with immunocompromised states. And this is the one that has a so-called complication where people can develop extensive blood and kidney dysfunction," he told CBC News.
