Winnipeg, MB: CFIA stymied in search for E. coli source
Full story: CBC.ca
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has no plans to recall any ground beef even though 65 Manitobans have been sick with E. coli poisoning this year. The agency has yet to figure out where the meat was contaminated. So far this year, 65 Manitobans have fallen ill with E. coli poisoning, 57 of them since the start of summer. By comparison, Winnipeg health officials recorded only 13 cases of E. coli infection last year, and 25 in 2004. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority has identified a St. Boniface meat market and several local restaurants as sources of the tainted hamburger. But a CFIA spokesman said there has been no solid evidence from laboratory tests to show where the meat became contaminated.
